The conflict in eastern Ukraine continues to escalate, with Ukrainian forces retreating from a neighborhood in the outskirts of Chasiv Yar, a strategically important town in the Donetsk region that has been heavily damaged by Russian assaults. The town, located near Bakhmut which was captured by Russia last year, holds a key position that, if taken, could jeopardize nearby cities and critical supply routes for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian army retreated from a neighborhood in Chasiv Yar due to the destruction of their defensive positions and the threat of serious casualties if troops remained in the area. Russian forces have been employing scorched-earth tactics, burning buildings and deploying relentless artillery strikes in an attempt to force Ukrainian troops to retreat.
Despite being outnumbered 10-to-1, Ukrainian forces have managed to hold off Russian advances in the area for the past six months. However, the intensity of Russian strikes has increased in recent weeks, with nearly 1,300 strikes, 130 glide bombs, and 44 ground assaults in the past week alone.
The situation is further complicated by a monthslong gap in military assistance from the United States, which has left Ukrainian forces stretched and struggling to defend against Russian attacks. Ukrainian officials have warned of worsening conditions as Russia continues to target energy infrastructure, resulting in rolling blackouts across the country.
In northern Ukraine, Russian drones targeted a power infrastructure facility in the Chernihiv region, leaving nearly 6,000 customers without electricity. Ukrainian officials have reported shooting down the remaining drones.
